Let's take a brief trip back to the Stone Age.
Until a few thousand years ago, we humans had only a very basic concept of numbers. We knew, for example, the difference between a herd of hairy bison and a single hairy bison, but to be honest, that was about it.
Counting to ten must have seemed as remote a concept as counting all the pebbles in the darkest corner of your cave. Hold that thought. As the concept of basic mathmatics evolved so humankind’s need for basic calculating tools became more pressing. And, although most of us had long since left our caves behind, those pebbles were to prove rather useful.
Arranged on the ground, a grid of pebbles became the first rudimentary calculating machine. However, they were hardly portable and although batteries weren’t yet a problem if someone accidentaly kicked a stone in the middle of your ‘calculator’ it did tend to complicate things a little. The solution was as elegant as it was ingenious.
Nobody can agree exactly where or when the first abacus was invented. What everyone does agree on is that it remains one of the most important inventions of all time. Self contained and capable of suprisingly complex calculations the abacus is still used around the world today and it’s unmistakeable shape is echoed in our logo. But the history of working with numbers began with the humble pebble. And that seems like an excellent point at which to introduce ourselves.
At Pebble we also simplify the way people work with numbers.
